In a surprise announcement on May 5, Kay Granger Elementary School Principal Kimmie Etheredge was named the Texas 2014 National Distinguished Principal (NDP) by the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association (TEPSA).

NISD will send seven students to the state track meet in Austin. Students from Northwest High School and Byron Nelson High School will compete on May 9-10 in various track and field events.

Byron Nelson High School is one of eleven Tarrant County area high schools in the top 150 schools in Texas. The U.S. News and World Report 2014 Best High School rankings were released last Friday, and Byron Nelson High School ranks 105.

Superintendent Karen G. Rue, Ed.D. recommended Linda Parker, Ed.D. as the Executive Director of Secondary Education at the April 28 school board meeting. Parker is currently the principal of Byron Nelson High School.

The NISD Board of Trustees recognized a group of roughly 39 community members and 74 staff members for participating in the school district’s first community and staff ambassador training academy.

In April, students in the Academy of Culinary Arts and Hospitality Services won second place in the hospitality project contest and third place for hotel operations in the 2014 International Hospitality and Tourism Management Professional Competition in Orlando.

The Byron Nelson High School Technology Student Association competed in the state TSA Leadership contest in Waco and finished second overall in Division III. The team received 69 state awards: 21 first place, 15 second place, 13 third place, 13 fourth place and 7 fifth place.

The Byron Nelson High School girls’ and boys’ golf team is state bound. Northwest High School senior and golfer Aaron Guaniao is advancing to state. The state tournament is April 28 and 29.

The Byron Nelson High School boys’ soccer team has won the 4A state championship game. This year, both the girls’ and boys’ soccer teams at Byron Nelson High School advanced to the state championship round of playoffs.
