Karlayna Platt is a student at Westlake Academy. The International Baccalaureate Program at Westlake Academy requires each 10th grade student to complete a personal project that reflects an area of interest illustrating learning traits developed during the MYP years of the school program.
When considering the topic of her focus for her personal project, Karlayna decided she wanted to find a way to encourage young children with dyslexia to believe in themselves. Diagnosed at an early age, Karlayna remembers the struggles and challenges of learning to read and spell. She admits that overcoming and accepting the reality that she learned “differently” than other children was not an easy task.
With a strong passion for helping others, Karlayna created a book with the purpose of empowering children with her gift of tenacity, growth and determination. She wants children to know that they can overcome any obstacle and that their strengths far exceed the challenges of dyslexia.
Although the book is simple in content targeting children ages 6-10, the author delivers a powerful message with positive affirmations, reflection pages, as well as writing passages with a few facts of dyslexia thrown in the mix. The book is 100% designed by the author.
The purpose of the book is to INSPIRE young children with dyslexia to discover their own internal capabilities and POWER.
As a community outreach initiative, Karlayna is donating the ebook version to Dyslexic teachers in the community so that the book can be given to children who are in dyslexic programs.
