For the second consecutive year, NISD has been recognized as a Fit-Friendly Workplace by the American Heart Association’s My Heart. My Life. This year, the school district has received a Gold Achievement. The American Heart Association strives to encourage and support the implementation of comprehensive wellness initiatives throughout the workplace.

Congratulations to the following Northwest ISD students for placing in the Texas Music Educators Association’s (TMEA) All-State ensembles: Byron Nelson students are Kaylee Langford (2nd alternate Soprano 1), Joe Caskey (1st chair Bass 2), Collin Napper (Trombone), Gini Choi (8th chair violin). Northwest High School students are Sebastian Davis (8th chair Tenor 2), Chas Tackett (7th chair Tenor 1), Benjamin Drinkwater (1st chair Bass Trombone), and Cynthia Kaniki (2nd chair Alto 2).

Northwest ISD will send eight students to the Texas Music Educators Association’s (TMEA) All-State choir concert. Byron Nelson students are Kaylee Langford (2nd alternate Soprano 1), Joe Caskey (1st chair Bass 2), Collin Napper (Trombone), Gini Choi (8th chair violin). Northwest High School students are Sebastian Davis (8th chair Tenor 2), Chas Tackett (7th chair Tenor 1), Benjamin Drinkwater (1st chair Bass Trombone), and Cynthia Kaniki (2nd chair Alto 2). This recognition is the highest honor a Texas high school musician can receive.

John M. Tidwell Middle School is one of 56 schools in Texas to receive the CREST award. CREST stands for Counselors Reinforcing Excellence for Students in Texas. In 2005, Texas School Counselor Association began a program called CREST to recognize schools with outstanding counseling program.

January is School Board Recognition Month and Northwest ISD is joining other districts across the state to thank these community volunteers for their commitment and contributions to our public schools. Great leadership always begins with a willing heart, a positive attitude, and a desire to make a difference.

Gene Pike Middle School Principal Chris Jones has been named a Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Distinguished Administrator. He was surprised with the recognition of his award in a staff meeting earlier this morning. Jones was nominated by his band director Jack Forbis.

Gene Pike Middle School is the recipient of a $1,000 grant from the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA). TMEA provides wonderful opportunities for educators and students across the state.

Recently, Northwest ISD students participated in a Jr. Chef competition in partnership with Aramark. Students submitted a one-of-a-kind recipe, explained why the recipe is healthy and presented a photo of the prepared meal. Beck Elementary School fifth grader Trinity Hoover has been named this year’s Jr. Chef for her original recipe Veggie Quinoa Pasta Salad.

Durham School Services bus driver Heather Bowen was one of the four individuals recognized in connection to a bus fire on December 3. Thanks to Bowen’s quick thinking, she was able to get all 10 students off the bus before the fire broke.

All Northwest ISD students are encouraged to enter the holiday card art competition. This year’s winner is Byron Nelson High School junior Shifah Mohammed. Mohammed’s art is featured as the cover artwork on the NISD 2014 holiday greeting card.
